The Low Withoot a Wick. The Story of Burntisland Gasworks

By George McLauchlan

Published by Burntisland Heritage

120 pages, Booklet,. December 2024

£10.00 + £2.50 p&p

The story of Burntisland Gas Works is the story of Burntisland in the Victorian and Edwardian age. The massive expansion of the town and the coming of industrialisation. It is also the story of two men, Mr Alexander Ross and Mr William Brown, gasworks managers, who between them served nearly 70 years. The title, ‘Low Withoot a Wick’ (light without a wick, being a reference to candles and lamps) was taken from Bailie Erskine’s book, ‘Glimpses of Modern Burntisland’.

Up The Castle And Beyond

Come along with me on an adventure. Step back to a time when life was very different

Up The Castle And Beyond

124 pages. Signed copy.

£12.50 plus £2.50 p&p

Life was slow, it was free, it was frugal at times, but we were not aware of that. Instead, we were happy. Not a care in the world, exploring our freedom by the beautiful shoreline, in the woods at Starleyburn, or daring to enter the forbidden, derelict and dangerously unsafe Rossend Castle. Join our Castle gang and let the adventures begin.

Ray wrote this book in her 80th year. A joyous recollection of her childhood years spent "Up the Castle" in the late 1940 s and 50 s. Many happy hours were spent in Kirkcaldy Library writing the book and embracing unknown technology under the watchful eye of Adam Smith, the father of modern

economics.

Ray and her husband Ossie have two sons and six grandchildren and now live in Kirkcaldy, just a few miles from their beloved Burntisland.
