The story of Burntisland Gas Works is the story of Burntisland in the Victorian and Edwardian age. The massive expansion of the town and the coming of industrialisation. It is also the story of two men, Mr Alexander Ross and Mr William Brown, gasworks managers, who between them served nearly 70 years. The title, ‘Low Withoot a Wick’ (light without a wick, being a reference to candles and lamps) was taken from Bailie Erskine’s book, ‘Glimpses of Modern Burntisland’.

The book tells the story of the Royal Burgh of Burntisland to the Union of Parliaments in 1707. Based on James Speed's notes on the history of Burntisland, which were transcribed by Alexander Foster in 1869. The 16th and 17th centuries were a time of great turmoil in Scotland, particularly on the question of religion. Ray and her husband Ossie have two sons and six grandchildren and now live in Kirkcaldy, just a few miles from their beloved Burntisland.
